The consternation about the Maple Leafs inability to acquire significant impact players and improve their chances to end their long playoff drought is understandable, but if you look at the additions and subtractions of the other clubs in the Eastern Conference so far, there is reason for optimism.
Here is a look at the comings and goings of the eight 2012 playoff teams rosters so far:

The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs will no doubt have an unremarkable amount of talent on the ice during their two alumni games during this year’s Winter Classic. The latest news, however, is not about the hall of famers who are on the ice, but rather those who will be standing behind the bench. [...]
As things stand right now, the only true priority left for the Los Angeles Kings this summer is to deal Jonathan Bernier, who has requested a trade. It makes little sense to hold onto Bernier, who could be a very valuable trade chip. He’s a young goaltender with plenty of potential, stuck behind a guy, [...]
Scotty Bowman is one of four coaches set to participate in the alumni matchup in conjunction with the Winter Classic.
Bowman and Barry Smith will represent the Detroit Red Wings against former Toronto Maple Leafs coaches Red Kelly and Pat Quinn on Dec. 31 at Comerica Park in Detroit.
The following day, the current Red Wings and Maple Leafs are scheduled to play at Ann Arbor's Michigan Stadium.
Bowman has been part of 12 Stanley Cup-winning teams, including nine as a head coach.
Kelly played on eight Stanley Cup championship teams, four with Detroit and four with Toronto.
When the 2012-13 NHL regular season schedule ended the Toronto Maple Leafs were once again left on the outside looking in when it came to the playoffs. While the downside of that is pretty obvious, the upside can be a little more difficult to see.
One of the advantages to missing the playoffs (if there are any) is that your general manager gets an extended period of time with which to evaluate his roster. Theoretically, this should have given Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke plenty of time to plan for change, which should have included making some key roster changes.
Thus far Burke has added veteran forward Jay McClement to his bottom six forwards, bought out the injury-prone Colby Armstrong, added veteran forward Keith Aucoin as a depth move and traded defenseman Luke Schenn to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward James van Riemsdyk to help out his top-six forwards.
While the McClement move should help the Maple Leafs penalty kill and the addition of JVR should bring ...

Certain Toronto Maple Leafs players need to pick up the slack in 2012-13, in order for the Blue and White to have a chance. One of those players is tough guy left winger Jay Rosehill. Rosehill, born July 16, 1985, only has two goals, three assists and 198 penalty minutes in 72 NHL games with [...]

The wish list of impact players was remarkably short going into the summer, but it was thought that GM Brian Burke would have his hand in the game in hopes of upgrading the talent level of his Maple Leafs club who imploded in the last two months of the regular season.
Mid-market clubs like Minnesota and Carolina have made the biggest splashes so far with the signings of Parise/Suter and the tr...
