The future prospects for the Toronto Maple Leafs changed forever on a fateful day back in 1971, when then owner Conn Smythe sold his hockey team to his son Stafford and his business partner Harold Ballard.The signs that this sale meant doom for the franchise, occurred just six days after the close of the sale, when Stafford Smythe died, and Ballard purchased the shares of Smythe's to become principle owner of the club.The Toronto Maple Leafs have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, and have not reached the Stanley Cup final in any year since Conn Smythe sold the club.The Maple Leafs did get close a few times, twice during the late 1970s and again in the early 1990s, but could not get past the conference final.The continual futility faced by this franchise and it's long suffering fans has been driven home by the recent collapse heading to the playoffs this season.
