The Phoenix Coyotes reacquired Matthew Lombardi on Thursday night, in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs that GM Don Maloney announced in a press conference with local media.
One of those reporters was Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic , who was using her cell phone to record Maloney’s comments on the deal. Her phone started vibrating with a call coming through. Maloney stopped talking, picked up the phone and read the caller’s name: Matt Lombardi, who had just interrupted a press conference being held in his honor:
Maloney – impeccably dressed for an NHL general manager, wouldn’t you say? – was hilarious in his reaction to the call, lauding how connected McLellan is and saying “I should have come to you about this deal!”
Surreal and funny moment; it’s just too bad Maloney didn’t put Lombardi on speaker phone.
